Day 474

Decided to make some adjustments to an essay I wrote for AP Lit last week for my post today...

This is an analysis of Ai's "The Man with the Saxophone"

Ai employs opposing images and descriptive, often repetitive dictionto convey the speaker's loneliness and the solstice he finds in the saxophone player. Loneliness is debilitating, a feeling the speaker knows all too well. He laments that "solitude is my companion," using the oxymoron to fully describe how alone physically and mentally he is. He even goes as far as to say that "only the steam pouring from the manhole covers seems alive," implying that in his solitude he feels like he's dead. However, as soon as he comes into contact with the saxophone player, his plight stops, as if cmpanionship has broken the curse.
