Day 463

Rewrite about the poem "In Mind" by Levertov...

Being kind and being interesting, at least by societal standards, cannot coincide with each other. You cannot “wear rags… and torn taffeta” (“In Mind”) while being kind in the eyes of tradition. Being kind is not just about attitude, but rather how someone presents themselves to the world, clothing, complexion, and all. Being kind can be interpreted as an allegory for abiding by societal norms, for it is “kind” to care about others' opinions. Levertov does not really look down upon the “moon-ridden girl" or “the elderly woman”, mostly because she only calls them “not kind”, not placing any other contempt on them rather than in those two words.
